My wife has finally gotten me to agree to get another dog. I've wanted another but not her first choice. For some reason, she was wanting a Newfoundland.

I've got her talked into some kind of retriever. We were looking at Chesapeakes or German short-hairs. But after discussing chessies with a co-worker (he has a super Lab), I'm pretty much all but written them off. Very worried about the temperment.

Any dog owners like to chime in on their dog of choice and why or know of some reputable breeders (GSP or others)? I'm located near Winston Salem but willing to drive to pick up.

Open to all the info I can get.
Having just sold two litters this spring, I could have fixed you up with a really nice retriever pup. A fellow forum member (Wilmington Skip) bought one of my pups, so perhaps he can tell you how his pup is doing.

You can check out my web site to see my dogs. I typically don't have litters from mid-summer through the winter because most folks buying their pup for hunting want to have several months to get the dog ready for the field. I do have a friend that just had a litter of black and chocolate pups, and if you are interested, send me a note and I will give you his contact info.
Shadow's doing great, I've fallen a little behind in training due to some work changes but she swims and sits and picks up anything she can find. I haven't had chance to put up any picks lately but I can definately recommend labs. My grandfather bred them back when I was a kid and the stock has changed a little in the time in between but temperment is one thing that hasn't, All the one's I've ever been around have been great. Shadow's finally starting to realize that everything doen't go in her mouth and that jumping up isn't the only way to express affection but then again she's only three months old.
I have two Australian Shepherds. A male blue merle (Bailey) who is eight and a female tri (Molly) who we think is about 2 and a half. Bailey came from a breeder in Clayton, NC. We got Molly from the Durham APS a year ago. She's an angel. She's not quite as smart as Bailey but is learning quickly.

Aussies are wonderful dogs, very active and a bit territorial but they are loyal and are easy to train.

Hope you find one that suits your needs. I highly recommend checking out your local APS.
Adopt; I've never been disappointed in the dogs I've adopted. I live just North of W-S.

Told you I'd get a good picture eventually
you can't beat a good Lab IMO. Get an English type unless you're an avid hunter, in which case some American varieties may have stronger physical abilities.
