They built a new lake near me in Texas. It's one of those water supply lakes. Probably a mile or more across with some small fishing piers scattered around. I went by one time and saw some guys pulling some catfish out about 2 or 3 lbs or so. They stocked it with catfish, bass, crappies, and probably a few more different kinds of fish. I wouldn't mind catching some but in such a big lake I figure it would be hit or miss. So any tips on bait, possible good fishing spots to look for, etc? I have done some pond fishing with a cane pole but that's about it. I'd like to catch a delicious bass.
Having spent 5 years in TX, I can tell you that the most effective bass fishing this time of the year will be early morning or in the evening. You can get a great topwater bite just before sunrise or just after sunset.
For the catfish, choose a place away from the piers that looks like some reasonably deep water. Bait it every other day with dog food chunks, liver, commercial catfish food or whatever you have that will sink down there and smell. You will have a can't miss catfish hole in about a week. Don't let the other guys see you or they will work your place over when you are not around.
Try the piers at night with live minnows for the crappie and the occasional suprise bass.
Good luck!
Thanks for the tips. Looking forward to trying them out. The catfish idea is pretty cool.
For the bass look for any structure in the water..ie fallen trees or brush or piles of rock. Then fish a plastic worm...Texas rigged of course
