Duke barely substituted, helped by Butler's cooperation with an ultra slow pace. -0- points off the bench. so much for not being athletic or deep enough to win a title. Singler and Scheyer were able to rise above a brutally physical game allowed by the officials to make some elegant shots. Singler was deadly

I would expect no less when ole Teddy calls a game. He is too busy strutting and hitching his pants to keep the game under control.
What a f@#%&*! d@#$%^.

I was terrified.
Scheyer had three fouls and missed a few FTs late in the 2nd half.
Smith had some terrible clock management.
And I kept saying to my wife (who was only watching the game because I picked Duke to win my bracket and was eligible for a $100 payout if they won) "Where is my typical Duke run!?!"
There was some bad JuJu going on. Zoo had 4 fouls most of the second half. Butler had a chance to win under a minute with a fade away baseline jumper that just missed. That last second half court heave missed by only a hair.
My God, that was a terrifying win!

Hayward's second to last shot was dead on line, came right back at him, just a hair long. his last shot was almost as close
Duke controlled the game for the most part. I wouldn't say it wasn't as close as it appeared but Duke did have control. Smith missed a bunny that would have put it out of reach

I don't post very often anymore, but I did want to post a congratulations for a hard-fought champiuonship. I also feel a need to commend the play of Lance Thomas, who fought hard and was responsible for many of the intagibles throughout the season.
Also, I echo PPG's sentiments.

a lot of observers just don't see the genius in Thomas and Zoubek's functions on this team, not to mention the selflessnees from them required to buy into their roles for the ultimate success of the team
I found myself starting to ask a few times "why did Zoubek not take a three-foot shot after that offensive reb..." but before I could finish, Scheyer or Singler was burying a second-shot three off a Zoubek offensive rebound and assist
K wasn't being gratuitous with all his comments about Thomas being the backbone of the defense either. he was almost a mirror image of George Lynch on his Carolina title team. Zoubek as Montross for that matter

My theory is that Thomas is similar to the role that Battier played when Brand, Avery and Burg were on the team. It was at the end of his college career that Battier started becoming a scorer, but he was always a defensive monster who did all the little things that didn't show up in the stat book.
As I said before with Zoub, he was billed as a 7 foot space eater with 5 fouls to give. Anything else he did in the game was gravy. There was a classic game this year where our big men dominated the offensive boards but just couldn't finish it. Coach K seems to have recognized that, which is why Zoub would dish to one of the Big 3 instead of putting it back up in the post. But Zoub was absolutely vital to our victories down the road. The Plumblee boys are better scorers but they can't eat space, alter shots and rebound like Zoub can.
I'm so DAMN proud of these boys.

^ agreed. a coach's job is to devise the best strategy and tactics with the resources he has for his team to win
some think that if a post player doesn't have x footwork or move or shot, etc. then the coach has failed, but they're missing the primary object. no doubt K does it differently than other coaches but then so do Boheim and many others you you have a hard time arguing with four titles over 20 years

Saw this add in the SI "Duke Championship" edition but I haven't been able to find it anywhere else.
It is a simple white background with a Duke logo on the top. Centered going down the page is this simple tagline.

I like close games...when my team is not in the championship. If they are, I want a blow out of titanic proportions. Too bad the Butler game wasn't like that.
